In a new role, Hanks appeared once more as Doug, an unsophisticated country boy, sporting a ‘Make America Great Again’ cap, who delivered an impressive performance on a fictional TV game show titled ‘Black Jeopardy’.
In 2016, Tom Hanks made his debut as Doug on the show “Black Jeopardy!” with a goal to portray the contrasts and shared aspects between supporters of Donald Trump and African-American culture.
For the 50th anniversary celebration of a longstanding NBC show, the character made a return appearance. This special event featured hilarious skits performed by top-tier celebrities such as Eddie Murphy, Kristen Wiig, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Bill Murray, David Spade, and Jon Lovitz – all former SNL stars.
However, as supporters of the MAGA movement noted, President Trump managed to garner support from a broad range of voters and even secure the popular vote after his election, making Doug’s previous stereotype seem outdated.
He was blasted for portraying a Trump supporter as a dimwitted ‘racist’ on the show.
In the latest rendition, Doug firmly declined to partake in a handshake with the host, portrayed by Kenan Thompson, who goes by the name Darnell Hayes.
Following this, supporters of Trump criticized Saturday Night Live and the actor from Forrest Gump, arguing that their depiction was biased and not fair.
Influencer Dominick McGee directly criticized Tom Hanks, alleging that during his Saturday Night Live appearance, Hanks showed disregard for all Republicans by portraying a Trump supporter wearing a MAGA cap.
A different reviewer noted an apparent pause of discomfort, commenting, “The spectators remained silent when Tom Hank’s character, a staunchly racist Trump backer unwilling to shake hands with a black individual, made his SNL appearance.
Trump supporters also used the moment to highlight what they claim is SNL’s declining viewership.
One Trump supporter posted, ‘It seemed amusing to Trump supporters like Tom Hank and Saturday Night Live to mock our group by donning MAGA hats and portraying a caricature of half the nation during their struggle to come to terms with the Democrats’ significant loss in November. Given that fewer people are tuning into SNL or NBC, this isn’t shocking.’
For the remaining three-and-a-half hours of the show, which boasted stars such as Cher, Bad Bunny, Adam Sandler, and Scarlett Johansson among others, the illustrious group couldn’t resist poking fun at Donald Trump.
