In the concluding season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, broadcasted in 2023, Kirk’s preserved remains were observed in stasis upon the arrival of the team at Daystrom Station – a classified Federation facility where the most perilous and precious cosmic artifacts are stored.
Reflecting on the situation, I can’t help but wonder if, given that Jim’s body is yet undiscovered, there might be a chance for some form of revival in the future. Perhaps with the cutting-edge technology of the 25th century, it could become possible.
It’s plausible that William Shatner might return to the series by employing digital de-aging techniques as his character Captain Kirk was biologically around 60 when he passed away, but Shatner is now in his nineties.
In terms of continuing a new Shatner Kirk adventure, it’s challenging to identify an appropriate setting, as none of the existing Star Trek series are established within the timeframe where his character is frozen in Starfleet according to canon.
Enhancing the complexity further is the fact that “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which takes place a few years before “The Original Series,” introduces a younger Jim Kirk, played by Paul Wesley. While it wouldn’t be unprecedented for Star Trek to have two versions of the same character at once, this dual portrayal would indeed add an extra layer to the narrative.
Indeed, the entertaining series “Strange New Worlds”, which is known for its relaxed and occasionally quirky approach, might find it intriguing to stage a rare encounter between Wesley’s Kirk and Shatner’s Kirk in a special episode. Maybe they could even manage to incorporate Chris Pine’s Kirk from the Kelvin Timeline (last seen in “Star Trek Beyond”) into the mix somehow.
After the movie “Generations,” William Shatner has intermittently revisited his iconic role, but these appearances haven’t been part of the official storyline. He has made guest appearances in video games, portrayed Kirk in some commercials, and played him in skits during awards shows.
If James T. Kirk were to come back now, following such a prolonged absence, it would be nothing short of extraordinary. Many fans may have believed that they witnessed the end of Kirk in 1994, so his potential reappearance would undoubtedly bring immense joy from Trekkies all over the world.
