The movie doesn’t make it clear why Josie has to infiltrate high school, which seems strange since she could simply talk to students instead. It becomes even more unusual when her superior is unhappy with her regular tasks and insists that she dig into the “scandals” involving sexual activities among teenagers. It’s puzzling why adults would need to know about the private lives of 17-year-olds in such detail.
… And Then ‘Truman Show’ Them Without Their Consent
If it’s not already questionable to spend time in the cafeteria at 30, Josie is tasked with covertly documenting her experience. In essence, this involves capturing footage of minors without their knowledge or parental permission, then exploiting their personal information for public consumption.
Additionally, it implies that a man spends his entire day parked outside a school in an unidentified vehicle, editing together video clips. Be mindful of strangers, children.
A Grown Man Hooks Up With a Teenager and That’s OK, for Some Reason
In a twist of events, Rob Arquette, who is older than Josie, re-enters high school – having previously been a star athlete – with the intent of assisting his sister and reviving his baseball career. However, this decision seems questionable from the start, as things spiral downward when he starts dating a student who is only in her sophomore year of high school. Given the passage of time since our graduation, that would make her roughly 16 years old at most, correct?
When Josie brings up the topic, he replies, “I’m already aware! I’m like a gymnast.” (Just remember one of Rob’s early lines in the movie: “We’ve got some precocious minors this year!” upon viewing photos of Josie’s peers.)
In addition, Josie agrees to dance with Guy, who is renowned as the most prominent adolescent in town (Jeremy Jordan). However, they don’t end up dating, and it’s more of an opportunity for Josie to revisit her unfortunate prom memories. Nevertheless, this situation doesn’t reflect positively on her.
A Teacher Falls for Someone He Thinks Is a Child
In the movie “Never Been Kissed,” Josie’s self-love journey is one of the central themes, which we appreciate deeply. However, what adds intrigue to the storyline is the developing romance between Josie and Sam, who happens to be an English teacher. Although it may seem unconventional, Sam mistakenly believes Josie is a 17-year-old high school student and persists in flirting with her despite this misunderstanding.
Following their ride on the Ferris wheel, which was a clear warning sign, he confides in Josie about his relationship troubles, an action that was highly inappropriate. Then, after boasting that future suitors would be queuing up for blocks to date her when she’s older, he invites her to the dance. It’s important to note that this gentleman seems to misunderstand Josie’s age significantly; she is clearly not 17 years old. This point needs to be emphasized.

The End Doesn’t Quite Make Sense, Even If It’s Sweet
It might seem logical to assume that after discovering he isn’t in love with his underage student, Sam would feel relieved. However, quite the opposite occurs; he becomes enraged and storms away, threatening to relocate to New York City with his girlfriend who he dislikes immensely. Rob, on the other hand, is upset with Josie (despite it being his own decision to join her), as this means he can no longer participate in the school’s championship baseball game and at 30 years old. Additionally, Josie loses her job from The Chicago Sun-Times, which seems peculiar because she was merely following her superiors’ instructions.
To regain the affection of her one true love, Sam, Josie pens an article for a competing newspaper, revealing her entire plan. She intends to stand on the pitcher’s mound before the game commences, hoping that he might forgive her as they share their first genuine kiss.
It seems that despite Josie and Rob’s scheme potentially causing trouble, it appears they are escaping consequences for some reason. However, there’s a hint that this public display of affection could mysteriously bring benefits to the school, the newspaper, and everyone involved in one way or another.
Absolutely, people tend to eventually forgive Josie for her mistakes and even go to support her. As time ticks down, Sam suddenly arrives, sharing a tender kiss with her before they ride away together towards the setting sun.
It’s a happy ending, we’re just not sure how we got here.
